This seminar has been prepared to give an in-depth insight on the preparation and organization of an independent medical examination. It will provide a step-by-step guide to obtaining the most accurate and decisive opinion from the specialist administering the examination. It is essential to select the right experts / assessors for the examination and obtain proper documents/medical information to complete a successful IME. The independent medical examination report should be accurate and precise. To obtain optimal results, it is essential that appropriate instructions are provided to the specialist for the examination needed. Choosing the suitable expert, providing the most up to date documents / information and asking appropriate questions will save time and expense. Join us for this presentation.

Laura Russell is the current chairperson of the Schedule 2 Employers' Group. Laura holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Western Ontario and McGill University. Prior to establishing CompClaim Management Inc. in 1988, she spent ten years in heavy industry (primarily steel and automotive parts manufacturing) in progressive Health & Safety and Labour Relations positions. Laura’s comprehensive knowledge and practical experience enables her to provide expert advice and hands-on assistance to a wide range of employers in various industries across Canada. Laura specializes in Safety Program leadership, critical injury/fatality investigations, and appeals representation. Laura was welcomed into the Law Society of Upper Canada as one of the first groups of licensed paralegal practitioners in North America. In 2014 Laura was the recipient of the prestigious Ron Ellis Award for excellence and outstanding contribution to workers’ compensation law in Ontario by the Workers' Compensation Section of the Ontario Bar Association.

Jeff joined the WSIB Board of Directors in October 2019 and currently serves as Vice-Chair of our Investment committee. Jeff was recently President and CEO of two Ontario-based manufacturing businesses with customers around the world. He also has deep roots in community volunteerism including being a co-founder and Board Chair of the Canadian Economic Development Assistance for South Sudan, and terms as President of Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Boys and Girls Club of London.

David is a partner at INQ Law, specializing in privacy and access. David is a graduate of Western University's law school, and was called to the Ontario bar in 1988. For over 30 years, David was a senior information and privacy lawyer with Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner. He held the roles of assistant commissioner, director of legal services and manager of adjudication with the IPC. He is an experienced litigator, and has appeared before the Divisional Court, the Ontario Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. David teaches administrative law and privacy law at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law and Osgoode Hall Law School. David is the author of the Annotated Ontario Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Acts (Thomson Reuters), and is an author of privacy law materials for the Law Society of Ontario's bar admission course.

Ken represents trade unions and associations in a diverse range of labour law issues, bringing particular interest and expertise to the area of workers’ compensation. A passionate advocate, he takes pride in his ability to assist injured workers in navigating the oft-challenging workers’ compensation system. Practising in all areas of labour law, Ken regularly appears at arbitration, before labour boards and other administrative tribunals, and provides advice on collective bargaining issues. With an empathetic and tenacious approach, Ken has a proven track record of achieving expeditious and fair results on behalf of his clients. He works on behalf of individual members’ interests as well as on broader matters that affect an entire bargaining unit. Ken has developed a special interest in Workplace Safety and Insurance Board claims representation and related issues.
